AIBE eligibility: LL.B., enrolment and who can apply

KanoonGPT

Part 5 of 6All India Bar Examination (AIBE)

Eligibility for the All India Bar Examination is fixed by the Bar Council of India notification for each examination number. The stable core is simple: the candidate must hold a professional law degree recognised for enrolment as an advocate, and must satisfy the enrolment / documentation conditions of that cycle. There is no separate “AIBE rank list” eligibility like CLAT; if you meet the notice and complete registration, you may sit.

Educational qualification

Requirement Detail
Degree 3-year LL.B. or 5-year integrated LL.B.
Institution University / college recognised for the purpose of enrolment under BCI norms
Final-year candidates Only if the notification for that year expressly allows them

Foreign law degrees and unusual dual qualifications need case-by-case reading of the brochure and State Bar Council enrolment practice—do not assume automatic eligibility.

Enrolment status

AIBE is described by BCI as a post-enrolment examination in the sense that practice is linked to enrolment plus clearing the bar exam. In operation:

  • Many candidates register after obtaining a State Bar Council enrolment number or provisional enrolment.
  • The registration form typically demands enrolment certificate details and uploads.
  • Result or CoP can be withheld if enrolment proof is missing or mismatched.

Provisional enrolment with an undertaking to pass AIBE within a stated period (commonly discussed as two years) is part of the BCI narrative of the exam’s design. Your State Bar Council’s current circular is the place to confirm how long provisional status lasts in your state.

Age, nationality and attempts

Recent cycles have not used a tight upper age cap the way some judicial service exams do. Nationality is ordinarily Indian citizenship or as stated for OCI / other categories in the form. There is generally no fixed lifetime limit on the number of AIBE attempts in public materials; candidates who fail reappear in a later notification. Always re-check the PDF for your year for any new restriction.

Documents commonly required at registration

Portals vary, but the following recur:

  • LL.B. mark sheets / degree or provisional certificate
  • Enrolment certificate or acknowledgement from the State Bar Council
  • Photograph and signature in prescribed format
  • Category certificate where fee concession or reserved qualifying percentage is claimed
  • Photo identity (Aadhaar, passport, etc. as listed)
  • Payment of the examination fee (General/OBC and SC/ST fee slabs differ by notification)

Name, date of birth and enrolment number must match across LL.B., enrolment and AIBE records; spelling mismatches are a frequent cause of result hold.

Fees (illustrative)

Fee amounts change. Public guides for recent years have cited higher fees for General/OBC than for SC/ST (for example figures in the ₹2,500–₹3,500 band have appeared in secondary round-ups). Use only the fee table inside your online form.

Who should not treat AIBE as optional

If you intend to practise as an advocate before Indian courts under the standard BCI pathway, AIBE is not a side exam. Law graduates who move only into non-practising roles (some in-house tracks, pure academia after NET, pure policy fellowships) may deprioritise timing—but anyone who wants a CoP on file should plan AIBE soon after enrolment.
