Explanation using Example

Let's consider a hypothetical scenario to understand the application of Section 33A of The Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974. Suppose, there's a factory in a small town that discharges untreated waste water into a nearby river, causing severe water pollution. Despite the provisions of other laws, the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), in accordance with this Act, can issue a written direction to the factory.

This direction might order the factory to stop its operations until it complies with the water pollution control norms. The factory, under this Act, is obligated to comply with this direction. If the factory continues to pollute the river, the Board can even order the local electricity board to stop supplying electricity to the factory, or the local water supply department to stop supplying water, thereby enforcing compliance.
