Explanation using Example

Imagine a factory that has been discharging its trade effluent into a nearby river before the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act of 1974 came into effect. With the commencement of this Act, the factory is now required to apply for consent to continue this discharge. The factory owner must submit an application by a deadline specified by the State Government's notification. If the owner fails to apply by this date or consent is not granted, the factory must cease discharging effluent into the river to comply with Section 26 of the Act.
