Explanation using Example

Imagine John, a sales promotion employee at XYZ Corp, has been working diligently for 11 months without taking any leave. According to Section 4(1)(a) of The Sales Promotion Employees (Conditions of Service) Act, 1976, John is eligible to request earned leave on full wages for at least one month (1/11th of his duty period).

Unfortunately, John falls ill and needs to take time off for his recovery. He has been employed for 18 months, which allows him to request medical leave under Section 4(1)(b), and he is entitled to half wages for at least one month (1/18th of his service period).

After several years, John decides to retire. As per Section 4(4), he is entitled to cash compensation for the earned leave he accumulated but did not use, provided he meets the conditions prescribed by the Act.

If, in a sadder scenario, John had passed away while still employed, Section 4(5) ensures that his heirs would receive cash compensation for the earned leave he earned but could not take advantage of.
