Ravi knows that his friend, Suresh, has stolen a motorcycle. Despite knowing this, Ravi agrees to hide the motorcycle in his garage to help Suresh avoid getting caught by the police. By doing this, Ravi is voluntarily assisting in the concealment of stolen property. Under Section 414 of the Indian Penal Code, Ravi can be punished with imprisonment for up to three years, or with a fine, or both.
Example 2:
Priya runs a small pawn shop. One day, a man named Rajesh comes in and sells her a gold necklace at a very low price. Priya suspects that the necklace might be stolen because of the unusually low price and the fact that Rajesh is unable to provide any proof of ownership. Despite her suspicions, Priya buys the necklace and later sells it to another customer. By purchasing and then selling the necklace, Priya is assisting in disposing of property that she has reason to believe is stolen. Under Section 414 of the Indian Penal Code, Priya can be punished with imprisonment for up to three years, or with a fine, or both.
