Explanation using Example
Example 1:
Ravi owns a piece of agricultural land in a village. The local government has installed boundary stones to demarcate the land owned by different farmers. Ravi's neighbor, Suresh, is unhappy with the boundary and decides to move the stones to encroach upon Ravi's land. By doing so, Suresh has committed an offense under Section 434 of the Indian Penal Code, as he has moved a land-mark fixed by public authority, making it less useful for its intended purpose. Suresh can be punished with imprisonment for up to one year, a fine, or both.
Example 2:
In a small town, the municipal corporation has placed signboards indicating the boundaries of a public park. An individual named Priya, who wants to expand her adjacent property, removes these signboards and places them further into the park area. By removing and relocating the signboards, Priya has committed mischief under Section 434 of the Indian Penal Code. This act makes the land-mark less useful for identifying the park's boundaries. Priya can face imprisonment for up to one year, a fine, or both.
