Example 1:

Ravi, upset with his neighbor Suresh, decides to teach him a lesson. One night, Ravi sneaks into Suresh's garden and deliberately breaks several flower pots and damages a few plants. The total cost of the damage is estimated to be around ₹200. Under Section 427 of the Indian Penal Code, Ravi can be charged with mischief causing damage to the amount of fifty rupees or more. If found guilty, Ravi could face imprisonment for up to two years, a fine, or both.

Example 2:

Priya, a college student, gets into an argument with her classmate, Anjali. In a fit of anger, Priya takes Anjali's smartphone and throws it on the ground, causing significant damage. The repair cost for the smartphone is estimated to be ₹3,000. According to Section 427 of the Indian Penal Code, Priya's actions constitute mischief causing damage exceeding fifty rupees. Consequently, Priya could be subjected to imprisonment for up to two years, a fine, or both if convicted.
