Explanation using Example

Example 1:

Ramesh is a security guard at a warehouse. He is entrusted with the keys to a locked storage room that contains valuable electronics. One night, Ramesh, without any authority, decides to open the storage room and take a few items to sell them for extra money. He is caught by the warehouse manager. Under Section 462 of the Indian Penal Code, Ramesh can be punished with imprisonment for up to three years, or with a fine, or both, for dishonestly breaking open the storage room he was entrusted to guard.

Example 2:

Sunita works as a cashier at a bank and is responsible for handling a locked cash box. She believes the cash box contains a large sum of money. One day, out of curiosity and without any permission, she opens the cash box to check the amount of money inside. Even though she does not take any money, her act of unfastening the cash box without authority can be considered an intent to commit mischief. Under Section 462 of the Indian Penal Code, Sunita can be punished with imprisonment for up to three years, or with a fine, or both, for her actions.
