Explanation using Example

Example 1:

Ravi and Suresh have a long-standing feud. One day, Ravi decides to kill Suresh. He waits for Suresh near his house with a gun. When Suresh comes out, Ravi shoots at him. However, Suresh ducks, and the bullet hits an innocent bystander, Ramesh, who dies on the spot. In this case, Ravi intended to kill Suresh but ended up killing Ramesh. Under Section 301 of the Indian Penal Code, Ravi is guilty of culpable homicide for causing the death of Ramesh, even though he did not intend to kill Ramesh.

Example 2:

Priya, in a fit of rage, decides to poison her colleague, Anjali, by mixing poison in her lunch. Priya knows that the poison is likely to cause death. However, on that particular day, Anjali shares her lunch with another colleague, Meera, who consumes the poisoned food and dies. Priya did not intend to kill Meera, nor did she know that Meera would consume the poisoned food. Under Section 301 of the Indian Penal Code, Priya is guilty of culpable homicide for causing the death of Meera, as the act of poisoning was intended to cause death, even though the actual victim was not the intended target.
