Explanation using Example

Example 1:

Ravi and Suresh are neighbors. One day, Suresh makes a deeply insulting comment about Ravi's family in front of several people. Ravi, in a fit of sudden anger, slaps Suresh. Ravi did not intend to hurt anyone else, nor did he know that his action would likely hurt anyone other than Suresh. Under Section 334 of the Indian Penal Code, Ravi could be punished with imprisonment for up to one month, or a fine up to five hundred rupees, or both, for voluntarily causing hurt on grave and sudden provocation.

Example 2:

Meena and Priya are colleagues at work. During a heated argument, Priya accuses Meena of stealing office supplies, which is a false accusation. Meena, feeling deeply provoked and humiliated, pushes Priya, causing her to fall and get a minor injury. Meena did not intend to hurt anyone else, nor did she know that her action would likely hurt anyone other than Priya. According to Section 334 of the Indian Penal Code, Meena could face imprisonment for up to one month, or a fine up to five hundred rupees, or both, for voluntarily causing hurt on grave and sudden provocation.
