Explanation using Example
Example 1:
Ravi is a small business owner in Mumbai. One day, a local goon named Arjun approaches Ravi and demands ₹50,000 as "protection money." When Ravi refuses to pay, Arjun and his associates beat him up, causing injuries. Arjun's intention is to extort money from Ravi by causing him physical harm. Under Section 327 of the Indian Penal Code, Arjun can be charged with voluntarily causing hurt to extort property and can face imprisonment for up to ten years and a fine.
Example 2:
Priya is a college student in Delhi. She is kidnapped by a gang who wants her father, a wealthy businessman, to sign over a piece of valuable land to them. To force her father to comply, the gang members physically assault Priya, causing her injuries. The gang's actions are aimed at extorting property (the land) from Priya's father by causing hurt to Priya. Under Section 327 of the Indian Penal Code, the gang members can be charged with voluntarily causing hurt to extort property and can face imprisonment for up to ten years and a fine.
Example 3:
Vikram is a software engineer in Bangalore. His colleague, Raj, wants Vikram to hack into the company's database to steal sensitive information. When Vikram refuses, Raj spikes Vikram's drink with a drug that causes him to become disoriented and weak. Raj's intention is to make Vikram comply with his illegal demand by causing him harm through the administration of a harmful substance. Under Section 328 of the Indian Penal Code, Raj can be charged with causing hurt by means of a drug with intent to commit an offence and can face imprisonment for up to ten years and a fine.
Example 4:
Sunita is a shop owner in Chennai. A local criminal named Karan wants Sunita to store stolen goods in her shop. When Sunita refuses, Karan and his associates physically assault her, causing injuries. Karan's intention is to force Sunita to engage in an illegal act by causing her physical harm. Under Section 327 of the Indian Penal Code, Karan can be charged with voluntarily causing hurt to constrain Sunita to an illegal act and can face imprisonment for up to ten years and a fine.
