Explanation using Example

Example 1:

Ravi and Suresh are neighbors who have had a long-standing dispute over a property boundary. One day, during an argument, Ravi picks up a large rock and raises it above his head while glaring at Suresh. Although Ravi does not throw the rock, Suresh believes that Ravi is about to hit him with it. In this scenario, Ravi has committed an assault because his gesture of raising the rock made Suresh apprehend that Ravi was about to use criminal force against him.

Example 2:

Priya and Anjali are colleagues who have had a disagreement at work. During a heated exchange, Priya starts to unchain her aggressive dog while looking directly at Anjali and saying, "Let's see how brave you are now." Anjali, seeing Priya's actions, believes that Priya is about to set the dog on her. In this case, Priya has committed an assault because her actions and words caused Anjali to fear that she was about to be attacked by the dog.
