Example 1:
Ravi, a shopkeeper in Mumbai, receives a batch of coins from a supplier. He notices that some of the coins have been altered, as they appear thinner and lighter than usual. Despite knowing that these coins have been tampered with, Ravi decides to keep them and use them in his daily transactions. One day, a customer reports the altered coin to the police. Upon investigation, it is found that Ravi was aware of the alteration when he received the coins. Under Section 252 of the Indian Penal Code, Ravi can be punished with imprisonment for up to three years and may also be fined.
Example 2:
Priya, a street vendor in Delhi, is given a set of coins by a friend who tells her that the coins have been altered to look like higher denomination coins. Priya, aware of the alteration, decides to use these coins to buy goods from wholesalers. A wholesaler notices the altered coin and reports it to the authorities. During the investigation, it is revealed that Priya knew about the alteration when she received the coins. According to Section 252 of the Indian Penal Code, Priya can face imprisonment for up to three years and may also be subject to a fine.
