Example 1:

Ravi, a businessman, is unhappy with the local municipal officer, Mr. Sharma, because he refused to approve Ravi's building plan due to non-compliance with safety regulations. In an attempt to coerce Mr. Sharma into approving the plan, Ravi threatens to harm Mr. Sharma's family if he does not approve the plan within a week. This act of threatening Mr. Sharma to induce him to perform his public duty in a certain way falls under Section 189 of the Indian Penal Code, 1860. Ravi can be punished with imprisonment for up to two years, or with a fine, or both.

Example 2:

Priya, a shop owner, is caught by a tax officer, Ms. Verma, for not paying the correct amount of sales tax. To avoid a penalty, Priya threatens to spread false rumors about Ms. Verma's involvement in corruption if she does not drop the case. Priya's threat to harm Ms. Verma's reputation to influence her official actions is a violation of Section 189 of the Indian Penal Code, 1860. Priya can face imprisonment for up to two years, or a fine, or both.
