Explanation using Example

Example 1:

Rahul, a civilian, decides to wear a full military uniform to a public event in Delhi. He also carries a fake military ID card. His intention is to gain respect and admiration from the public by making them believe he is an actual soldier. Under Section 140 of the Indian Penal Code 1860, Rahul can be punished with imprisonment for up to three months, a fine of up to five hundred rupees, or both, for impersonating a soldier.

Example 2:

Priya, who is not a member of the armed forces, wears a naval officer's uniform to a job interview, hoping that the interviewer will be impressed and give her the job. She also carries a badge that closely resembles an official naval badge. Priya's actions are intended to deceive the interviewer into believing she is a naval officer. According to Section 140 of the Indian Penal Code 1860, Priya can face imprisonment for up to three months, a fine of up to five hundred rupees, or both, for her actions.

Example 3:

Amit, a college student, wears an airman's uniform to a fancy dress competition at his college. He does not carry any tokens or badges and clearly states to everyone that it is just a costume for the competition. Since Amit has no intention of making others believe he is an actual airman, he is not violating Section 140 of the Indian Penal Code 1860 and will not face any punishment.
