Explanation using Example

Example 1:

Rahul and Suresh plan to rob a bank in Mumbai. They discuss the details, including the date, time, and method of the robbery. They also arrange for weapons and a getaway vehicle. However, before they can execute their plan, the police catch wind of their conspiracy and arrest them. Since the planned robbery is an offence punishable with rigorous imprisonment for a term of two years or more, both Rahul and Suresh can be charged under Section 120B of the Indian Penal Code for criminal conspiracy and will be punished as if they had actually committed the robbery.

Example 2:

Priya and Anil plan to cheat in their university exams by using unauthorized materials. They discuss their strategy and decide to bring cheat sheets into the examination hall. However, before they can carry out their plan, a fellow student overhears their conversation and reports them to the authorities. Since cheating in exams is not an offence punishable with death, life imprisonment, or rigorous imprisonment for a term of two years or more, Priya and Anil can be charged under Section 120B(2) of the Indian Penal Code for criminal conspiracy and may face imprisonment for up to six months, a fine, or both.
