Example 1:

Ravi is a candidate in the local municipal elections. To gain favor with the voters, he organizes a free dinner party and provides free alcohol to the attendees. This act of providing food and drink to influence voters is considered "treating" under Section 171E of the Indian Penal Code. If caught, Ravi would be punished with a fine, as treating is specifically mentioned to be punishable by fine only.

Example 2:

Sunita, a government official, offers Rs. 10,000 to a voter, Rajesh, to cast his vote in favor of a particular candidate in the state assembly elections. This act of offering money to influence Rajesh's vote is considered bribery under Section 171E of the Indian Penal Code. If Sunita is caught, she could be punished with imprisonment for up to one year, or with a fine, or with both.
