Explanation using Example
Example 1:
Ravi was convicted in 2015 by a court in Mumbai for committing theft (an offence under Chapter XVII of the Indian Penal Code) and was sentenced to four years in prison. After serving his sentence, Ravi was released. In 2021, Ravi was again caught and convicted for committing robbery (another offence under Chapter XVII). Due to his previous conviction, Ravi now faces enhanced punishment and could be sentenced to life imprisonment or up to ten years in prison.
Example 2:
In 2010, Priya was convicted by a court in Delhi for counterfeiting currency (an offence under Chapter XII of the Indian Penal Code) and was sentenced to five years in prison. After completing her sentence, Priya was released. In 2018, Priya was again found guilty of forgery (another offence under Chapter XII). Because of her prior conviction, Priya is now subject to enhanced punishment and could be sentenced to life imprisonment or up to ten years in prison.
