Explanation using Example

Imagine a factory where workers are scheduled to work on shifts. One of the shifts is from 6 PM to 2 AM. According to Section 57 of The Factories Act, 1948:

  • When a worker finishes his shift at 2 AM, his holiday would start from that moment and last for 24 consecutive hours. So, if he finishes on Tuesday at 2 AM, his day off would be from Tuesday 2 AM to Wednesday 2 AM.
  • The hours that the worker has worked after midnight on Tuesday (from 12 AM to 2 AM) will be counted towards the working hours of Tuesday, not Wednesday.
