Imagine the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly has recently been formed after elections. According to Section 23(1) of The Assam Reorganisation (Meghalaya) Act, 1969, the newly elected members of the Assembly must choose a Speaker and a Deputy Speaker from among themselves. The first session is convened, and the members elect Mr. A as the Speaker and Ms. B as the Deputy Speaker.

A few months later, Mr. A decides to resign from his position. In line with Section 23(2)(b), he submits his resignation in writing to the Deputy Speaker, Ms. B. Following his resignation, the Assembly must elect a new Speaker as per the provision in Section 23(1).
