The Special Protection Group Act, 1988 was enacted by the Parliament of India to provide for the constitution and regulation of the Special Protection Group (SPG) for providing proximate security to certain persons. The Act defines the powers, duties, and functions of the SPG and provides for the security of the Prime Minister of India and his/her immediate family members, former Prime Ministers of India and their immediate family members, and such other persons as may be specified by the Central Government. The Act also provides for the establishment of a special court to try offences under this Act.
