Explanation using Example

Imagine that Aman owns a piece of land in Punjab, and his ownership is recorded in the record-of-rights, which is the official land record maintained under the provisions of The Punjab Land-Revenue Act, 1887. Now, suppose Baljit claims that he is the rightful owner of the same land. Under Section 44 of the Act, Aman's ownership entry in the record-of-rights is presumed to be true. So, if Baljit wants to challenge Aman's ownership, he must provide sufficient evidence to prove that the entry in Aman's favor is incorrect. Until he does so, or until the records are lawfully updated to reflect a new ownership entry, the land is presumed to belong to Aman.
