Imagine a woman named Priya has obtained a protection order against her abusive husband, and the order includes a provision for her to reside in the shared household without disturbance. The Protection Officer assigned to her case is responsible for ensuring that the husband complies with this order. However, the Protection Officer neglects his duties and does not take any action when Priya reports that her husband is still harassing her at home. As a result, Priya files a complaint against the Protection Officer for not performing his duties as required by the protection order. The Magistrate finds that the Protection Officer had no sufficient cause for his failure to act and therefore, under Section 33 of The Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005, the Protection Officer could be punished with imprisonment, a fine, or both.
