Explanation using Example

Imagine a construction company is working near a pipeline that has been laid under the authority of Section 7 of The Petroleum and Minerals Pipelines Act. Despite clear markings and warnings, one of the workers, out of curiosity, digs near the marked area and damages the pipeline. This act obstructs the flow of petroleum through the pipeline.

In this scenario, the worker could be prosecuted under Section 15(1) for wilfully damaging the pipeline, which is an offence punishable with imprisonment, a fine, or both. Furthermore, if the damage was severe and caused a significant disruption in the supply chain, the worker might face the harsher penalties outlined in Section 15(2), which include rigorous imprisonment for up to ten years and a fine.
