Summary
The Official Languages Act, 1963 is an Indian law that was enacted to provide for the languages to be used for the official purposes of the Union of India, and to regulate the use of languages for official purposes of the Union and for matters connected therewith. The Act provides for the use of Hindi in addition to English for the official purposes of the Union and restricts the use of English alone. It also provides for the continued use of English in official work of the Union for those states where it was in use before the commencement of the Act. The Act further provides for the setting up of the Official Language Commission and the appointment of Language Officers to implement the provisions of the Act.
