Explanation using Example
Imagine John issues a cheque to Alice as payment for her services. Alice, upon receiving the cheque, decides to forgive John's debt for her personal reasons. She physically crosses out John's name on the cheque, signaling her intent to cancel the debt. This act of cancellation means John, as the maker of the cheque, is discharged from his liability to pay Alice, and this would also apply to anyone who might have claimed the money from Alice as the holder of the cheque.
