Imagine a situation where John, a farmer, decides to grow cannabis plants in his backyard without any authorization from the government. This act of cultivation is in direct violation of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985. Since John is cultivating the cannabis plants, he is contravening clause (a) of Section 20 of the Act.

If caught, John could face rigorous imprisonment for a term that may extend up to ten years and could also be fined up to one lakh rupees, as per the punishment prescribed under Section 20, sub-clause (i)(a) of the Act.
