Summary
The Multimodal Transportation of Goods Act, 1993 was enacted to regulate the transportation of goods through multiple modes, including land, water, and air. The act aims to ensure the safe and secure transportation of goods, as well as the liability of multimodal transport operators. Under this act, a multimodal transport document is issued by the multimodal transport operator, which acts as evidence of the contract of carriage and receipt of goods. The act provides for the establishment of a Multimodal Transportation of Goods Tribunal to hear disputes arising under the act. The act applies to the transportation of goods both within India and outside India if the place of taking charge of the goods and the place of delivery are in India.
