Explanation using Example

Imagine John is caught by traffic police for not wearing his seatbelt while driving, which is an offence under The Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. The offence is not punishable with imprisonment but carries a fine.

The court issues a summons to John stating that he:

  1. Can appear in court through a lawyer or personally to contest the charge, or
  2. Can choose to plead guilty before the hearing date by sending a money order with the specified fine amount. He must indicate his plea of guilt on the money order coupon itself.

John decides to plead guilty to the charge. He sends the money order with the fine to the court and indicates his plea on the coupon. Since he has complied with the procedure, the court will not take any further actions against him for this offence, and he will not be disqualified from holding or obtaining a licence due to this guilty plea.
