Imagine that Mr. Sharma owns a car which was involved in a severe accident and is now beyond repair. According to Section 55(1) of The Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, Mr. Sharma must report this to the local registering authority where he resides within fourteen days. He must also submit the vehicle's certificate of registration for cancellation.
Upon receiving the information and the certificate of registration, the local registering authority, under Section 55(2), will cancel the registration if it is the original authority where the car was registered. If not, it will forward the documents to the original registering authority to carry out the cancellation.
