Explanation using Example
Imagine an elderly woman, Mrs. Gupta, who is 75 years old and lives with her son. Her son decides to move to another city for a job opportunity and, instead of arranging for her care or taking her with him, he leaves Mrs. Gupta at a bus station with no intention of returning for her. A passerby notices Mrs. Gupta is disoriented and alone, and contacts the authorities. Upon investigation, it is found that her son intentionally abandoned her. Under Section 24 of The Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007, Mrs. Gupta's son could be charged and potentially face imprisonment for up to three months, a fine up to five thousand rupees, or both, for abandoning his elderly mother.
