Summary

The Legal Practitioners Act, 1879 was enacted to regulate the legal profession in India. It establishes the qualifications and conditions for admission as an advocate, provides for the punishment of misconduct by advocates, and regulates the enrollment, suspension, and removal of advocates from the rolls of legal practitioners. The Act also provides for the establishment and maintenance of a common roll of advocates, who are entitled to practice law in all courts throughout India. It empowers the High Courts to make rules for carrying out the provisions of the Act, and provides for the punishment of contravention of these rules. The Act was amended several times, including in 1926, 1952, and 1961.
