Explanation using Example
Imagine a local grocery store owner who purchases a set of weighing scales to measure fruits and vegetables for sale. The scales, however, are not calibrated according to the national standards of weights and measures. A customer, suspecting that the scales are inaccurate, files a complaint with the weights and measures department. Upon inspection, it's determined that the scales show a weight of 1.1 kilograms for an actual weight of 1 kilogram.
Under Section 27 of The Legal Metrology Act, 2009, since the scales do not conform to the specified standards, the store owner could be fined up to twenty thousand rupees. If the owner had previously been convicted of the same offense, they could face imprisonment for up to three years, or a fine, or both.
