Explanation using Example

Let's consider a hypothetical scenario to understand the application of Section 84C of The Information Technology Act, 2000. Suppose Mr. A, a computer programmer, attempts to hack into a bank's secure servers with the intention of stealing sensitive customer data. He installs malicious software and starts to break down the bank's cybersecurity defenses. However, before he can access any data, the bank's security team detects the intrusion and blocks him.

Even though Mr. A did not succeed in his attempt, he has committed an offence under this Act. He attempted to commit a crime punishable by the Act and took steps towards its commission. Therefore, according to Section 84C, he can be punished with imprisonment, a fine, or both. The term of imprisonment could be up to one-half of the longest term provided for the offence he attempted to commit, and the fine could be as much as is provided for the offence.
