Explanation using Example

Let's imagine a scenario where John, a software engineer, is approached by his friend, Mark, who asks him to help in hacking into a company's database. Although John does not participate in the actual hacking, he provides Mark with the necessary tools and guidance to carry out the hack. The company's database is eventually breached, and sensitive information is stolen.

In this case, under Section 84B of The Information Technology Act, 2000, John is guilty of abetting the offence, as the act was committed as a consequence of his instigation and aid. Even though John did not directly commit the offence, he can be punished with the same punishment as Mark, who executed the hack, since there's no express provision in the Act for the punishment of such abetment.
