Bare Act

  • CHAPTER XI: OFFENCES

Whoever, by means of any communication device or computer resource cheats by personation, shall be punished with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to three years and shall also be liable to fine which may extend to one lakh rupees.

Simplified Act

If someone pretends to be another person using a phone, computer, or any other device that can send messages, and they trick someone else in this way, they can go to jail for up to three years and also have to pay a fine of up to 100,000 rupees.

He sends an email to Jane, a customer of the bank, pretending to be from the bank's customer service and asks Jane to provide her account details for a 'system update'.
