Explanation using Example
Imagine a scenario where John sends a series of threatening emails to his former business partner, Mike, stating that he will burn Mike's warehouse if he does not pay John a sum of money. Mike, feeling threatened that his property and business could be destroyed, reports this to the police. The police investigate and find evidence of the threats made by John. Under Section 506 of The Indian Penal Code, 1860, John's act of threatening to destroy property by fire constitutes criminal intimidation. As the threat is to cause the destruction of property by fire, John could potentially be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend to seven years, or with fine, or with both, as per the severity of the threat as outlined in the act.
