Explanation using Example

Imagine a scenario where John, a married man, goes on a business trip. While he is away, his friend Mike, who is aware that John's wife, Emily, is married to John, engages in a consensual sexual relationship with Emily. Under Section 497 of the Indian Penal Code, 1860, Mike could be charged with the crime of adultery for having sexual intercourse with Emily, knowing she is married to another man, without John's consent. However, Emily, the wife, would not be subject to criminal liability as an abettor in this situation.
