Explanation using Example

Imagine a scenario where an individual named Raj plans to steal a motorcycle from a parking lot. Before committing the theft, Raj deliberately carries a knife with him, intending to use it against the motorcycle owner, Vikram, or any witness who might try to stop him or catch him after the theft. As Raj is attempting to steal the motorcycle, Vikram approaches and catches him in the act. To escape, Raj threatens Vikram with the knife, causing Vikram to fear for his life and allowing Raj to flee with the motorcycle.

In this situation, Raj has not only committed theft but has also prepared to cause fear of hurt to facilitate the theft and his subsequent escape. Therefore, under Section 382 of the Indian Penal Code, Raj's act qualifies for a higher degree of punishment due to the preparation for causing fear of hurt, and he could face rigorous imprisonment for up to ten years along with a fine.
