Explanation using Example
Imagine a situation where John, in a fit of rage during an argument, picks up a knife and lunges at his neighbor, Mike, with the clear intention to kill him. Mike manages to dodge the attack and escapes with a minor cut. Even though Mike did not die, John's action constitutes an attempt to murder under Section 307 of the Indian Penal Code because he had the intention and took an overt act towards killing Mike. John can be prosecuted and, if convicted, may face imprisonment up to ten years or even life imprisonment if the court deems it fit, along with a possible fine.
