Explanation using Example

Imagine John and Mark are neighbors. They have a heated argument over a parking space. In a moment of anger, John slaps Mark, causing him a bruised cheek and a swollen eye. Mark decides to press charges against John for the assault. Since John has voluntarily caused hurt to Mark, he could be charged under Section 323 of The Indian Penal Code, 1860. If found guilty, John could face imprisonment for up to one year, or a fine of up to one thousand rupees, or both, provided that the case does not fall under the exceptions provided by Section 334 which deals with hurt caused on grave and sudden provocation.
