Explanation using Example

Imagine a scenario where Mr. Sharma is a witness to a road accident and is called upon by the police to give a statement regarding what he saw. As Mr. Sharma was present at the scene, he is legally bound to tell the truth to the public servant, in this case, the police officer. If Mr. Sharma refuses to answer the questions asked by the officer, despite being legally bound to do so, he could be charged under Section 179 of The Indian Penal Code, 1860. If found guilty, he may face simple imprisonment for up to six months, a fine up to one thousand rupees, or both.
