Explanation using Example
Imagine a situation where Person A is aware that Person B plans to commit a bank robbery. Person A, intending to help Person B, lies to the police about Person B's whereabouts on the day of the planned robbery, thus concealing the criminal design. If Person B successfully commits the robbery, Person A could be charged under Section 120 of The Indian Penal Code, 1860, and face a punishment proportionate to the crime committed by Person B, up to one-fourth of the maximum imprisonment term for the robbery itself. If, however, the robbery is not carried out, Person A may still face legal consequences, but the potential imprisonment term would be up to one-eighth of the maximum term for the robbery.
