Explanation using Example

Imagine a scenario where Rahul is convicted of a minor theft and the court imposes a fine of Rs. 5,000. The court also orders that, in default of payment of the fine, Rahul will have to undergo simple imprisonment for 15 days. Rahul is unable to pay the fine immediately and is therefore taken into custody. After 10 days, Rahul's family manages to arrange the money and pays the fine on his behalf. According to Section 68 of The Indian Penal Code, 1860, the moment the fine is paid, Rahul's imprisonment will end, and he will be released from custody, even though he has not completed the full 15 days of imprisonment.
