Explanation using Example

Imagine a situation where a person, Raj, is convicted of a crime for which the maximum imprisonment term is 4 years and the court also imposes a fine. If Raj fails to pay the fine, under Section 65 of The Indian Penal Code, the court can order him to serve additional imprisonment. However, this additional term for non-payment of the fine cannot exceed 1 year, which is one-fourth of the maximum 4-year term for the original offence.
