Explanation using Example

Imagine a scenario where an individual is convicted of multiple crimes and the court orders the sentences to run consecutively (one after the other). One of the sentences is imprisonment for life and another is for 10 years. According to Section 57 of the Indian Penal Code, the life imprisonment is treated as 20 years for the purpose of calculating fractions. If the court decides to reduce the sentence by half for good behavior, the life sentence would be considered as 10 years in this calculation, plus the 10 years for the other crime, making it a total of 20 years after the reduction.
