Example 1:

Scenario: A theft case in a local market.

Examination-in-chief:

  • Prosecutor: "Mr. Sharma, can you please tell the court what you witnessed on the night of the theft?"
  • Mr. Sharma (Witness): "Yes, I saw the accused, Mr. Ramesh, breaking into the jewelry shop around midnight."

Cross-examination:

  • Defense Lawyer: "Mr. Sharma, are you sure it was Mr. Ramesh you saw? It was quite dark, wasn't it?"
  • Mr. Sharma: "Yes, it was dark, but the streetlight was on, and I clearly saw his face."

Re-examination:

  • Prosecutor: "Mr. Sharma, can you confirm if you had any doubt about the identity of the person you saw?"
  • Mr. Sharma: "No, I am certain it was Mr. Ramesh."

Example 2:

Scenario: A road accident case involving a pedestrian and a car.

Examination-in-chief:

  • Plaintiff's Lawyer: "Ms. Gupta, can you describe what happened when you were crossing the road?"
  • Ms. Gupta (Witness): "I was crossing the road at the zebra crossing when the car driven by Mr. Verma hit me."

Cross-examination:

  • Defense Lawyer: "Ms. Gupta, were you using your phone while crossing the road?"
  • Ms. Gupta: "No, I was not using my phone. I was paying full attention to the traffic."

Re-examination:

  • Plaintiff's Lawyer: "Ms. Gupta, can you tell the court if the traffic light was green for pedestrians when you were crossing?"
  • Ms. Gupta: "Yes, the pedestrian light was green, and I had the right of way."
