Explanation using Example
Imagine a situation where a person, Raj, is found with an expensive watch that was reported stolen a day earlier. The police arrest Raj on suspicion of theft. In court, based on Section 114(a) of The Indian Evidence Act, the judge may presume that Raj either stole the watch or knew it was stolen when he acquired it, given the close timing of the theft and Raj's possession. It would then be up to Raj to provide a reasonable explanation for how he came to possess the watch.
