Let's imagine Mr. Sharma, a senior government official, is appointed as the Comptroller and Auditor-General (CAG) of India. Before his appointment, he was a member of the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) and had been in government service for 30 years. Under Section 6(1) of The Comptroller Auditor-General's (Duties, Powers and Conditions of Service) Act, 1971, when Mr. Sharma assumes the office of the CAG, he is deemed to have retired from the IAS. However, his service as the CAG will count towards his pension from the IAS.
