Explanation using Example
Example 1:
Ravi was a victim of a theft that occurred on January 1, 2020. He discovered the theft immediately and reported it to the police on the same day. According to Section 469(1)(a) of The Code Of Criminal Procedure 1973, the period of limitation for taking cognizance of the offence would commence from January 1, 2020, the date of the offence.
Example 2:
Priya was a victim of a fraud that occurred on March 15, 2019, but she only discovered the fraud on June 1, 2019. She reported it to the police on June 2, 2019. According to Section 469(1)(b) of The Code Of Criminal Procedure 1973, the period of limitation for taking cognizance of the offence would commence from June 1, 2019, the first day on which the offence came to her knowledge.
Example 3:
A burglary took place at Suresh's house on February 10, 2018, but the identity of the burglar was unknown. The police identified the burglar on April 20, 2018. According to Section 469(1)(c) of The Code Of Criminal Procedure 1973, the period of limitation for taking cognizance of the offence would commence from April 20, 2018, the first day on which the identity of the offender was known to the police.
Example 4:
Meena was a victim of an online scam on July 5, 2021, but she did not realize it until August 10, 2021. She reported it to the police on August 12, 2021. According to Section 469(1)(b) of The Code Of Criminal Procedure 1973, the period of limitation for taking cognizance of the offence would commence from August 10, 2021, the first day on which the offence came to her knowledge.
Example 5:
A hit-and-run accident occurred on October 1, 2020, but the driver was not identified until November 15, 2020. According to Section 469(1)(c) of The Code Of Criminal Procedure 1973, the period of limitation for taking cognizance of the offence would commence from November 15, 2020, the first day on which the identity of the offender was known to the police.
